The Christmas Spirit of Giving

What do you do when there’s not enough to eat and your water makes you ill?

Nearly three of every five families in Guatemala live in poverty. They struggle to have enough food to eat and in San Miguel Dueñas they often find the water coming out of their taps to be so polluted it is brown or even black. That makes everyone in the family sick, adding doctor’s bills to their expenses, causing adults to stay home from work and children to miss school.

During this season each year Open Windows asks its donors to help us address these issues by donating bags of food and eco-filters for drinking water. Last year we were able to distribute 1,000 bags of food and 100 eco-filters. Each family receiving food got two bags, one for itself and one for a family it knows who is in even more dire straits. For those families, it was a double gift. They got enough to eat during the holidays and they got the chance to give to others, something they cannot normally do.

Continuing the tradition, we are again asking for your help. For $145 you can give two bags of food and one eco-filter but every donation, large or small, will be appreciated. To donate either food or water, or both, click here. The families of San Miguel Dueñas thank you in advance for your generosity.
